10th Frederik van Eeden Lecture | Lea Ypi

‘Is capitalist freedom true freedom?’

Language: English

Lea Ypi is Professor of Political Philosophy at the London School of Economics and Associate Professor of Philosophy at the Research School of Social Sciences in Canberra, Australia. In addition to her academic research on topics such as normative political theory, the political philosophy of Marx and Kant and critical theory, she regularly writes for The Guardian, The New Statesman and The Independent. In her award-winning philosophical autobiography Free (W. W. Norton & Co., 2022), she explores the idea of political freedom on the basis of her own history.
Ypi grew up in communist Albania, which radically changed course in the aftermath of the fall of the Berlin Wall. But is capitalist freedom true freedom? In times of political turmoil, the philosophical tension between negative and positive freedom leaves the realms of theory. Ypi considers freedom to be neither the freedom from imposed obligations, nor the freedom to do whatever you feel like doing. Freedom equals moral freedom: the freedom to do the right thing. During the 10th Frederik van Eeden Lecture, Ypi explains how we put moral freedom into practice.
